US Military Allegedly Plotted to Blow Up the Moon During Cold War
Do you think we are living in uncertain times now? Well, at least it’s no Cold War. In a plot that resembles one that an evil villain in a James Bond movie might love, the United States’ government once planned to blow up the moon with a bomb.
The time period was the 1950s and the Soviet Union had just humiliated the United States with their launch of Sputnik 1, the first satellite orbiting in space. The United States’ Air Force approached physicist Leonard Reiffel in 1958 asking him to develop a plot that would show a mushroom cloud explosion from the moon.
The United States’ government has never officially confirmed its involvement with this plan, and the plot would have remained secret, if not for Carl Sagan. The renowned astronomer, then a graduate school student, provided mathematical calculations for the experiment.

Italian Court Charges Scientists for Manslaughter Over 2009 L’Aquila Earthquake
An Italian court has sentenced six Italian seismologists to six years in prison for manslaughter over the deadly 2009 earthquake in L’Aquila.
The decision is already unpopular in the scientific community, since seismologists say that it is impossible to determine when an earthquake will hit, or how big it will be when it does. Erik Klemetti, an assistant professor at Dennison University and a contributor for the blog Wired, tweeted, “I hope the Italians realize how backwards they are in this L’Aquila trial and its verdict. I know [it’s] not everyone, but terrible precedent.”

Humans Have Been Responsible for Greenhouse Gases Since the Roman Empire
At this point, greenhouse gas emissions, and humans’ culpability for them, are as close to a fact as science can get. Researchers had assumed that humans’ role in creating greenhouse gases began in during the Industrial Revolution. But Celia Sapart, from the Netherlands’ Utrecht University, and her colleagues have found evidence that humans have played a role in the creation of greenhouse gas emissions since the time of the Roman Empire.
What’s more, they believe that their findings may mean that scientists should rethink climate change models that did not take human involvement into consideration before the nineteenth century.

Dracula Dinosaur Newly Described, “Would Be Nice Pet”
The newly discovered dinosaur is a herbivorous species with a parrot-like beak and, strangely, sharp canines sitting in front of tall teeth meant to cut up plants.
A strange and tiny dinosaur has just been documented for the first time in scientific literature. Almost as strange as its physical appearance, was its journey to being described.
Fossils of the family of this dinosaur, called Pegomastax africanus or “thick jaw from Africa,” have appeared everywhere from China to England. It was first discovered 50 years ago in South Africa but was soon scooped up by Harvard University. The fossils were never described and then, when it was shipped back to Cape Town’s South African Museum, the true nature of the fossils remained undiscovered.
